Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 7 years in the 'un-Islamic nikah case.
In the "un-Islamic nikah" case, a Rawalpindi court sentenced Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison each on Saturday, February 3.
Their marriage, which occurred during Bushra Bibi's Iddat period, is the focus of the case. Senior civil judge Qudratullah issued the ruling following a complaint filed in a makeshift court located inside the Adiala district jail by Bushra's ex-husband Khawar Fareed Maneka, who defined their marriage as "un-Islamic and illegal."
In the same week that Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the cypher case and 14 years in prison for the Toshakhana case, the court rendered its ruling.
Maneka believes that Imran and Bushra's marriage was "fraudulent."
After the four case witnesses completed their cross-examinations, Khan and Bushra's testimonies were recorded in line with section 342.
The complainant's attorney Raja Rizwan Abbasi, Bushra Bibi's attorney Usman Gul, and Khan's counsel Salman Akram Raja also made their closing arguments the day before.
Maneka argued in his appeal that Bushra and Khan were "fraudulent" in their nikkah and that their marriage was properly sealed during the latter's iddat, following her divorce from Maneka.
According to Geo.tv, the petition noted, "That above said nikah and the marriage ceremony was neither legal nor Islamic as it was solemnised without observing iddah period."
The petition alleged that the PTI leader "stigmatised the complainant and his family just to achieve his unethical and immoral objects through intrusion in the complainant's peaceful marital life," which Maneka had further claimed had shattered his entire life.
Maneka petitioned the court, "In the interest of justice, it is humbly prayed that respondents No. 1 [Imran Khan] and No. 2 [Bushra Bibi] be summoned and punished strictly in accordance with law."
Bushra also has to cope with a lawsuit initiated by Khawar Maneka, her ex-husband, which claims she had an unlawful marriage and fornicated.
Imran feels that an Iddat lawsuit was started to "humiliate" him and Bushra Bibi.
PTI founder Imran Khan told reporters that the Iddat case was launched to "humiliate and disgrace" him and his wife Bushra Bibi after they were found guilty.
"This is the first time in history that an Iddat-related case has been brought," Khan remarked.
He continued by noting that this was the first Toshakhana case in which a prison term of 14 years had been handed down.
In Islam, a woman is expected to observe a period of time called as iddat, during which she is not allowed to marry another man, following either a divorce or the death of her spouse.
